(Oct. 1) -- Despite the hit Las Vegas economy took after the Sept. 11 attacks, casino development is not at a standstill. And that's good news for the Las Vegas job market.
The Cannery Casino Hotel in North Las Vegas is the first casino to open in over a year. Its construction is already employing hundreds of workers, and when the property officially opens in January, it will offer 1,000 permanent jobs.
It will be the first of several casino construction projects that will eventually bring 11,000 new jobs to Southern Nevada. When the dust settles, the new Cannery will be a 50,000-square-foot casino with 200 rooms. The $100 million facility is expected to employ 1,000 new people.
Tuesday, thousands did showed up for those positions. The job applicant line stretched around three corners of the building. Many in line said they didn't mind waiting for hours since they've been waiting for months for work. Most of these job seekers waited over four hours before getting inside for an interview. Now they will be waiting, and hoping for the phone to ring.
Eddie Council, a 40-year resident of North Las Vegas, has already been hired as a recruiter.
"I'm excited because of the opportunity for North Las Vegas, for the employment," he said.
"We believe we're the biggest opening in terms of employment. We think the economy is ready for the addition of a new casino in the Las Vegas Valley," said Tom Willer with the Cannery Hotel.
While the next megaresort to be built, Le Reve, isn't expected to be built until 2005, some of the strip casinos like the Venetian are expanding. A new 1,000-room tower will be completed next year.
Most of the new hotel rooms will be a result of hotel expansions in the next couple of years. The Orleans expansion accounts for the most amount of new hotel rooms this year.
Next year, the Venetian and Mandalay Bay will complete their expansion projects.
Marriott will build a new hotel; Bellagio will complete its expansion in 2004; and Le Reve will be the first major hotel to be built on the strip since the Aladdin opened in 2000 . That's 9,000 new rooms by 2005.
"Our research department here at the LVCVA has determined that each new hotel room that's constructed results in 1.4 to 1.5 new jobs. So we're looking at 11,000 new jobs we can expect with the construction right now," said Erika Brandvik with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
Opportunities: New Casinos Mean More Money Generated in Our Economy
The new Cannery Hotel will begin to take applicants for jobs on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002. They say pay range for jobs will be anywhere from $10/hour to an $80,000 a year job.
