I-Team: Residents Vote to Take Back HOA Board

After continued pressure from the FBI and ongoing reports in the media about corruption on HOA boards, another community is fighting to get their condos back.

The Chateau Versailles board held a meeting Friday, but the actual board members didn't show up.

The community members are fed up. They say their board members rigged votes and took control of the community all because they are friends with developer Leon Benzer.

They'd funnel construction work his way and everyone would win -- everyone but the condo owners. Now another recall vote goes forward.

It's like the sound of one hand clapping -- an HOA board meeting with no members of the board showing up.

Gordon Macaulay and others say their board members all have connections to Benzer, the owner of Silver Lining Construction. The board is led by board president, Marcella Triana, seen in a photo with Benzer.

The board set up a first right of refusal system with Benzer's company in order to help give him more work. With allegations swirling, the community wants them all gone after hearing no explanation for months.

"Those people, they didn't have a meeting with us. It was not discussed at any board meetings," said resident Gordon Macaulay.

Triana and others were supposed to show and explain everything. Instead, they backed out at the last minute, sending pizzas, "They're media shy."

A man lingering in the back did show up. The I-Team learned he represents Silver Lining. He didn't stay for long, "There's something radically wrong when they don't show up and they just can't face their own people that supposedly voted them in."

One unnamed man fought against the recall. That angered many of the residents. They asked him why the board didn't show up.

"Because they're afraid. You guys are a lynch mob here," he said.

He eventually was talked out of the room, leading to a few more signatures to fuel a recall.

"We think our board is just totally inept and we want them out. We want hopefully, people who live here on the property," said Macaulay.

Now the vote goes forward, with or without the board. Chateau Versailles's management company will now prepare ballots to remove the three board members.

It seems the residents all across the valley are taking back control. They aren't going to wait for the investigation to end. They have seen the way business has been done and they don't want to have anything to do with it anymore.
