Newly diagnosed type 2 diabetics who lose weight soon after their diagnosis gain better control of their blood pressure and blood sugar.
New research published online in Diabetes Caresays that benefit lasts even if they regain the weight.
Las Vegas Endocrinologist Fred Toffel says it's believed that these long-term benefits are mostly due to a reduction in toxic substances that come from having too much abdominal fat.
These substances destroy insulin-producing cells, and that contributes to the progression of diabetes, "So therefore, if you go for a period of time with less abdominal fat, you'll have less toxicity in the long run, helping slow the progression of the disease and hopefully slowing the progression of the complications."
Dr. Toffel says the findings are good news, considering so many people regain the weight they've lost from dieting.
