BLM Says Cause of Horse's Death Determined

Updated:

It took a full year, but the BLM has finally issued a report about what killed 71 wild horses at the Tonopah Test Range last summer.

As the I-Team has reported previously, BLM has repeatedly delayed the results of testing it conducted beginning last July.

A report compiled by the Desert Research Institute says the horses probably died because of nitrate poisoning.

The BLM says high nitrate levels in a water hole on the range were from natural sources. However, the bureau told Eyewitness News it never tested its original samples to see if any manmade elements were present in the water or soil.

DRI did not conduct tests until seven months after the horses were found dead.

BLM was specifically asked about possible man made contamination last July, since there had been a previous incident where dozens of horses were poisoned.

The source of the previous contamination was quickly identified as chemicals generated by the Air Force. This time, BLM did not look for such contamination.

DRI says man made contaminants degrade quickly and thus can't be ruled out.
