Weight loss is risky business when diabetics restrict their insulin to slim down. And new research suggests the practice is more dangerous than patients may realize.
A diabetic can lose weight by reducing their intake of insulin. But they could also be shortening their life span by an average of 13 years -- according to a new study to be published in Diabetes Care.
Not everyone who cuts back on insulin is trying to lose weight, but many others are -- especially among young female type one diabetics.
"Frankly, I think a lot of these girls traditionally are the ones we look at doing this, are reacting to the fact that they have this concept of what their body image is suppose to be. The long term issues -- hypertension, heart disease, kidney damage and blindness -- all directly related to this problem," said Thomas Walker, Diabetes Nurse Practioner,
The new study found the death rate is three times higher for insulin-restricters than for those who kept up with their body's insulin demands.
