An eight-year-old girl is in the hospital in a coma. Police say she was brutally attacked by her own mother and her mother's girlfriend. Both women were in court Friday morning, where bail was set at $400,000 each.

The Clark County district attorney's office says the young girl is not on life support but is still unresponsive at Sunrise Hospital after being hit with electrical cords, belts, and then choked.

The abuse took place in August.

Police say it wasn't a one time beating by the mother and girlfriend; it had been going on for several weeks.

The door to the apartment in southeast Las Vegas has, for the most part, remained closed for the last two months ever since the abuse that took place inside.

Police say Monique Anita Elliot beat her eight-year-old girl and nine-year-old son all with help of her girlfriend Shatanna Williams.

Neighbors say they never suspected a thing.

Theresa Johnson said, "I would hear them cry sometimes like normal, and you would hear some yelling. You know, mothers will yell. But I never would have imagined she would have been beating on her kids."

But on the afternoon of Aug. 15th, an ambulance and police showed up at the apartment. Neighbor Genie Goel remembers the whole thing.

"The little girl was on a stretcher and was on an oxygen mask and they had a neck collar on her neck," Genie Goel said.

Two months later, that child is still in a coma.

An arrest warrant says the child suffered three strokes inside the apartment she called home after Elliott and Williams beat her with cords and belts. The two children were also forced to squat while holding phone books over their heads for a period of time and then do push ups.

A criminal complaint says the little girl was also choked. 911 wasn't called until the next day.

Now, the girl's mother and girlfriend face child abuse and child neglect charges.

Metro Lieutenant Brian Evans said, "The suspects in question believed they were just disciplining the kids. But you have to keep in mind that in the discipline process, it can lead to injuries and these injuries were very severe."

The nine-year-old boy is now okay, but police say the eight-year-old girl will never fully recover.

Neighbors are now wishing they could have done something to help.

"I never saw any marks or bruises. The kids were always laughing and smiling," Theresa Johnson added.

And Genie Goel commented, "I just heard a lot of banging and it sounded like they were jumping off countertops and things like that. I didn't know nothing like that was going on."

They can only hope the innocent girl, who suffered behind these doors, pulls through and the people responsible stay in jail.

The boy is now in protective custody. Originally, both suspects were arrested for not only child abuse but also attempted murder because of the severity of the injuries.

The district attorney's office has dropped that charge saying they can get the same punishment with child abuse charges. If the eight-year-old girl dies, the D.A. will file murder charges.

Monique Anita Elliott and Shatanna Williams both lived at the home and are accused of causing those injuries.

They will be in court Oct. 19 for an arraignment.
