The Las Vegas marathon is about two months away and thousands of runners are getting in shape for the 26-mile run. Eyewitness News will be bringing you stories each Monday of people who are participating in this year's event.
One local couple is recapturing some of the physical fitness of their unusual past-profession.
"If I can finish it, I can say that I've run a marathon," said Stephan Cote.
This will be the first time Las Vegas residents Stephan and Lisa Cote have run a marathon. And they both admit, the practice is not getting any easier.
"Now we're up to 12 miles. It's getting a bit more tougher in the morning. You have to be a bit more prepared. It's not something you can just go out and do without the proper rest and nutrition and .. etc.," said Lisa.
"I'm starting to have aches and pains that weren't there at the beginning. So, maybe my physical condition is better from a cardio point of view. But now there are a few other things that are starting to bother me. But I'll just keep going with the program," said Stephan.
Lisa currently works in real estate, and Stephan -- for a software company. And what they retired from 10 years ago was a high-flying trapeze act.
Their former profession demanded they be in top physical condition -- and that's one job requirement they miss.
"Just being full of muscle and strong. It was the best shape we were ever in our lives. Of course because we were making a living using our bodies. So it was pretty good shape," said Lisa.
When the Cotes retired from their lofty show-business career, they lost the motivating force that kept them fit. Stephan says the marathon is a means of getting some of that motivation back.
"I'm getting heavier and heavier. I'm getting out of shape. And I'm getting older. So I thought if I don't do it now, I might not ever do it. So I decided to take the challenge and give it a shot," said Stephan.
"We're at an age where we've achieved a lot of our goals we've written down. So the challenges have to get greater, larger and more spectacular. And something to really look forward to and say -- I did it," said Lisa.
The 2007 Las Vegas Marathon is Dec. 2 and Channel 8 is once again the broadcast partner for the event.
