Wild Horse License Plate Issued in Nevada

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles has issued the first license plates honoring the state's wild horses and burros.

The specialty plate features a rearing white mustang and blue background, with several smaller images of burros. It was designed by artist James McKew of Carson City.

DMV officials say a portion of the proceeds from the plates will go toward preservation of the animals.

Shirley Allison of Horse Power says plate Number One is being auctioned off, and a bid of at least $7,000 is expected.  Allison says her group hopes to use part of the proceeds to help those who have been feeding herds in rural Nevada.

Governor Gibbons proclaimed Thursday as a day in recognition of Nevada's wild horses and burros.

Nevada is home to most of the nation's wild horses and burros, which are protected under federal law.
