"We almost lost her once out there," said Tracy Episcope. "We almost lost her once out there," said Tracy Episcope.

A wild horse that was rescued from an icy mud pond had to be put down one day later.

Tracy Episcope and her husband pulled the baby mustang from the deep mud, but had to wait hours for the Bureau of Land Management to help them get the young wild horse to a veterinarian.

Episcope hoped to adopt the mustang if she made it, but the doctor said she suffered to many injuries.

Dr. Victoria Bentley said, "Initially the hope was that the horse was suffering from exposure and that if we were able to return her temperature to normal that she would be able to stand up. But it turned out that she had been down for a significant period of time prior to being rescued that caused irreversible damage to her neuromuscular system, and she was unable to support her own weight and her prognosis for life was grave."

The decision to euthanize the horse was ultimately up to the BLM.

Meanwhile, the Bureau of Land Management plans to gather and remove wild horses from burned areas in Lincoln and White Pine counties next week. The round-up will happen in Clover Creek, Clover Mountains and Dry Lake to name a few.

The BLM says the gathering is being conducted to prevent wild horses from starvation and to stabilize lands burned by summer wildfires.

Dozens of horses will be up for adoption.

(Nov. 30) 11 p.m. -- It was a long, exhausting day for a wild horse that got stuck in an icy mud hole in Cold Creek on Thursday. This is the second such incident reported this week.

On Wednesday, the Channel 8 I-Team reported the death of a wild horse after Cold Creek residents worked furiously to pull the exhausted animal out of the mud.

Tracy Episcope found the young mustang just after 10 a.m. Thursday. Somehow, the 3 or 4-month-old horse had gotten herself stuck, and it is possible she was there all night.

Episcope called her husband and the two of them managed to pull the horse out.

"We almost lost her once out there. Her mouth dropped, she started just laying down. Her eyes started shutting. Just took a lot of blankets a lot of rubbing down and circulation," said Tracy Episcope.

The horse is eating and resting.

Episcope is hoping she pulls through, but will be keeping a close eye on the animal. She plans to adopt the mustang.
