A three-year-old girl remains in critical condition after the van she was riding in was hit by a Republic Services garbage truck.

Police say the driver may not have been paying attention when he slammed into the back of the van near Nellis and Lake Mead.

A mangled car is all that was left of the car carrying a mother and her two daughters. Tuesday afternoon, a Republic Services dump truck smashed into the car.

Her sister and mother were treated and released.  If the child dies, the Republic Services driver could face vehicular manslaughter charges.

Another Las Vegas family feels the pain of the girl's family.

In 2004, Ashley Swain was hit and killed by a Republic Services truck driver. They spoke with Channel 8 Eyewitness News about what they want changed.

"My heart sank for this lady. To look at the car because my daughter was driving a suburban and it was a soda can. It was crushed," Angela Ipock, whose daughter was killed in the 2004 crash, says.

Angela Ipock lost her 19-year-old daughter Ashley the day after Christmas in 2004. A Republic Services truck hit her vehicle.

"She was a best friend, a daughter, she walked into a room and she just glowed," Ipock says.

She can't believe another driver from the same company caused Tuesday's crash.

"It's very careless. It's bad enough that it happened once, or twice but to keep on happening again and again," Ipock says and questions what Republic Services does for training its drivers.

"Is there really training and are they really being watched, are they doing the right thing?" Ipock says.

Ipock's family has settled with the Republic Services Company, but she still feels something needs to be done.

"Is it more important to get from one job site to another on time even if it means taking a life?" Ipock says.

Ipock says she is talking to lawmakers asking what she can do to avoid more wrecks like this from happening again.
