Wild storms moved through the valley this week. The fierce winds and powerful lightning toppled trees around the Las Vegas Valley. But it was a light show valley residents won't forget.
One tree fell on a car only moments after the driver got out. Lighting hit another tree just a few feet away from where Laurie Kelly lay sleeping. Luckily she is a heavy sleeper. She slept through all of it.
Kelly said, "I didn't hear it. I heard the storm, or maybe I heard it but I didn't realize it was my yard and my tree."
Lightning hit the 14-year-old mesquite tree and traveled down the 30-foot trunk splitting it in half only 20 feet from Laurie's front door. Lickily, it was far enough away from her house and did not cause other damage.
But this tree has sentimental value to Laurie Kelly. She grew up with this tree as teen. And so she plans to do all she can to save it. The outer edges of the trunk are charred from the lightning.
The fierce winds also took down a pair of trees in North Las Vegas that were standing for decades. They fell on cars owned by Gerardo Hernandez's friends.
The first tree crashed to the ground just moments after his friend Angela stepped out.
Gerardo Hernandez said, "Just seconds, seconds. She just walked in, then we heard the bang."
The tree scratched up and bent the fenders of their cars. But now Gerardo and friends are waiting on what Mother Nature might cook up Tuesday night.
