Who is Chaz Higgs, besides the husband of the late Kathy Augustine? What is the status of his nursing license? And where did he live before coming to Nevada?

The Channel 8 I-Team did some checking Friday of public records to find out about Higgs. What we found is that he's moved around the country quite a bit. But, as far as criminal records, so far he comes up clean.

During a news conference on Monday, Chaz Higgs commented, "It happened Saturday morning, but I'd rather not go into details."

That is just about all the public knows about Chaz Higgs, as his wife lay dying in a Reno hospital.

Reporter: "Stressed out about campaigning?"

Higgs replied, "That's what I am thinking because she did complain about being majorly stressed out recently with the campaign and that sort of thing, so."

But long before Higgs came to Nevada he was in the United States Navy. Public records indicate he was first enlisted in December of 1983 as a petty officer first class.

Records show that he listed several address in the '80s and '90s including Quantico, Virginia, Jacksonville, North Carolina, Eureka, California and Louisville, Tennessee.

According to the Nevada State Board of Nursing, Higgs was first issued a nursing license in July of 2002 and has had no disciplinary actions since then.

According to the Las Vegas Sun, Higgs first met Kathy Augustine while Higgs was attending to the care of her then husband, Charles.

Charles died of a heart attack in August of 2003 at Sunrise Hospital according to his death certificate.

The Sun reports Augustine and Higgs were married just one month later in Hawaii.

Here's a look at what is known about this case:

  • The call came in about Higgs' attempted suicide at around 10:30 Friday morning. We don't yet know who made the call.
  • Tuesday: Kathy Augustine dies.
  • Kathy Augustine was pronounced dead on Tuesday after an apparent heart attack days earlier.
  • Thursday: investigation expanded.

The investigation into Augustine's death expanded Thursday when the Nevada Department of Investigation partnered with Reno police.

Augustine is the only Nevada official ever impeached and convicted. The assembly impeached her for using state equipment for her 2002 election campaign.
