Perez, Colon Stayed at Downtown Motel

Metro Talked About The Investigation

The three-year-old girl's body was found in a dumpster six weeks ago. Thursday night, Metro Police say it is no longer a mystery who Baby Jane Cordova Doe is -- they believe she is Crystal Figueroa.

Metro looked into hundreds of leads, but it was not until the girl's grandmother reported her missing in central California that they found out who she was. The girl's mother, 24-year-old Gladys Perez and her 28-year-old boyfriend, Marc Anthony Colon are now under arrest facing murder charges.

A Criminal Complaint and police report detail the child's final hours.  The report says the child was beaten at a downtown Las Vegas apartment complex and began vomiting on the night of Jan.11th.  The mother, Gladys Perez, told police the child was still vomiting and complaining of stomach pain the next morning and they decided to take her to the hospital.  Perez told police that the girl's body began to seize and then she stopped breathing and died in the car.

In the police report, Perez says that they drove around for a while and then Colon decided to put the girl's body in a box and place it in a dumpster.

According to an autopsy, the child had multiple abrasions to the face and numerous contusions to the chest, stomach, back and buttocks, arms, hands, legs and feet.  She also had two broken ribs and a lacerated pancreas.

In a news conference, Metro Lt. Lew Roberts said, "Thank God for the detective work of a deputy out of California that put two and two together and gave us a call."  That detective had just filed a report with a woman who said her granddaughter was missing. Lt. Roberts continued, "Through some sharp detective work he was given a picture and he went onto the website and matched it to the picture he was given."   That picture was shown to the grandmother who identified the child as her granddaughter.  She even told the detective that she had bought the white coat with the hearts for her granddaughter.

Based on that information, the detective identified the girl looking back at him as Crystal Figueroa. Lt. Roberts said, "To be quite frank with you, this is one of those cases we got a lucky break."

Metro Police immediately went to California where they caught up with Perez.  Marc Anthony Colon, was arrested in Minnesota on an active parole violation charge out of California.

Lt. Roberts said, "We also recovered a vehicle and responded to a location where they stayed for a short period of time."

Lt. Roberts said, "This was not a case we were willing to let go to the wayside." Police say with more than 1,000 tips -- one paid off -- as they continue to learn more about who this little girl was and how she died.

The girl's mother has already been charged with murder. Police say her boyfriend will also be charged with murder.

The child was found in a dumpster at the Villa Cordova apartments in the area of Karen and Eastern on Jan. 12.

Eyewitness News has also learned the child has a 7-year-old sister. We do not know who has custody of her.
