Colleen McCarty joined the I-team in August of 2005, following her assignment in Carson City covering the 2005 Nevada Legislative Session. Colleen is a familiar face to Southern Nevada viewers. She began covering the valley in 1998. Following a move out of state, Colleen joined KLAS-TV in 2004, when she and her husband returned home to Las Vegas. You can also catch her on KNPR radio as a guest host of the public affairs program, "State of Nevada."
Colleen started her journalism career as a photographer for the "Daily Californian", a newspaper in Berkeley, California. What started as a job to earn pocket money became a passion and Colleen earned a degree in Mass Communications from the University of California at Berkeley. She went on to receive a master's in Broadcast Journalism from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. Colleen took her first reporting job in Pocatello, Idaho. Following her first stint in Las Vegas, she worked as a crime reporter at KSTP in Minneapolis, Minnesota and as a producer for "Cold Case Files," on the A&E television network.
Colleen has received numerous awards for her storytelling abilities, including 7 Emmy nominations. Most recently, she was nominated for an Electronic Media Award for her coverage of the State Legislature. In 2002, she won an Electronic Media Award for her stories on "Bum Fights," and in 2001 she was named a "Public Health Hero," by the Clark County Health District for her investigative stories on the plight of the valley's homeless youth.
During her off hours, Colleen likes to read and explore the outdoors with her husband, though these days, the two dedicate every spare moment to their twin girls. Colleen went into labor while covering the legislative session in Carson City.
