7 people charged in cell phone smuggling case

LAS VEGAS -- Seven people are facing charges in connection with scheme to smuggle cell phones and other contraband into the High Desert State Prison, according to the Attorney General's Office.

Two of those phones were found inside the prison cell of accused Strip shooter Ammar Harris. He is one of the seven facing charges.

Those charged also include Correctional Officer Derland Blake. He has been charged with three counts of furnishing a portable telecommunications device to a state prison, three counts of asking or receiving bribe by a public officer, misconduct by a public officer and conspiracy. Also charged in the case are: Amy Colon, 35, of Atlanta, Reann Gadson, 33, of Las Vegas, Olga Gonzalez, 27, of Las Vegas, Derrick McKnight, 35, of Las Vegas and Charmaine Simons, 53, Las Vegas. Blake was arrested Thursday, according to Clark County Detention Center records.

According to the AG, Harris and another inmate received the cell phones.

Harris is accused of shooting into a car and killing the driver along the Strip in Feb. 2013. The car then ran into the back of a cab, causing a fiery crash that killed the cab driver and his passenger.

One of the woman already arrested and charged in the case was in court Thursday. She plans to enter a plea deal in district court on Sept. 8.
