I-Team: Women charged in prison cell phone smuggling case

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- Three women are charged with bribing prison guards and helping to smuggle a cell phone to one of the state's most notorious prisoners.

The I-Team has learned at least two women are already behind bars in connection with a security breach that sent accused Strip shooter Ammar Harris to a maximum security lock up while awaiting trial.

Harris was in court Wednesday morning, as lawyers argued over bringing him back to Las Vegas prior to his trial so he could work with his lawyers.

He had been moved to the state's maximum security prison in Ely recently, after corrections officers found a cell phone in his cell.

Three women have now been charged in connection with that serious security violation.

They are Olga Gonzales age unknown, 33-year old Reann Gadson and 53-year old Charmaine Simmons.

All are accused of conspiracy, bribing a public official and furnishing a cell phone to a state prisoner.

Harris is not named in the criminal complaint, but the incidents took place around the time Harris was moved from High Desert Prison near Indian Springs to the maximum security facility at Ely.

He was moved as a security precaution, after a cell phone was found in his cell.

Harris is serving time for sexual assault while awaiting his upcoming murder trial.

He is accused of gunning down reputed pimp Kenneth Cherry on the Las Vegas Strip and causing a fiery crash that also killed a local cabbie and a tourist.

There appears to have been at least two cell phones smuggled into High Desert Prison and another inmate got one as well.

Two of the women charged in the plot are slated to appear before a judge Thursday.

The I-Team doesn't know yet if a corrections officer is also being charged, but the women are accused in a plot to bribe a corrections officer into smuggling the phones into the facility.
