LAS VEGAS -- Metro Police have identified the suspect arrested for robbing a Bellagio casino cashier as 34-year-old Scott Carmitchel of Kansas.

He is being charged with robbery, burglary while in possession of a gun, grand larceny and two counts of battery on a police officer. Those charges came after police say he was extremely combative with correction officers at the Clark County Detention Center.

According to officers, Carmitchel refused to cooperate in any way with officers during the booking process.

Police say at around 8:30 p.m. Friday, Carmitchel used a gun to take $43,500 from the casino. He later paid prostitutes at another hotel near the Strip with money still bound in Bellagio wrappers. They say he spent about $10,000 on a high-end shopping spree after claiming he found a bag of cash in the Bellagio parking lot.

Police say investigators were tipped by a tourist who reported the suspect paid the tourist $300 to rent him a room at the Hard Rock Hotel.

Police later detained four prostitutes who left the room, two carrying wads of cash with Bellagio labels.

Kansas Department of Corrections records show Carmitchel served time for battery against a law officer and a robbery in 1998, and he was sent to prison last year for making a criminal threat.

He was paroled in December and the department listed him as "absconded" with his whereabouts unknown as of May 29.

He is set to be in court Wednesday.
