I-Team: Ammar Harris moves prisons over cell phone

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS — A self-proclaimed pimp facing trial for the murder of three people on the Las Vegas Strip has been moved to a higher security lock-up. Ammar Harris is already in prison for raping and robbing a woman in 2010.

He faces trial for a shooting on the Strip in 2013 that killed another reputed pimp and caused a fiery crash that killed two others. Harris faces three murder counts for that crime, but he's already serving 16 years-to-life for an unrelated sexual assault conviction.

In a court hearing on Monday, it was learned correction officers found a cell phone in Harris' cell at High Desert Prison near Indian Springs. Because of that security violation, Harris was moved to Ely State Prison — the state's maximum security facility.

It's unknown if Harris will face additional charges for having the cell phone, or who else played a role in smuggling the phone into prison. Harris' lawyers wanted him moved to the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas so he can help prepare for his September murder trial. But the cell phone discovery is reportedly complicating that move.

Another court hearing is slated for Aug. 6 on the issue.
