Officer involved in shooting and man who was shot identified

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The man who was shot and killed by North Las Vegas Police on Friday and the officer who shot him have been identified.

The Clark County Coroner's Office has identified the man who was killed as 34-year-old Kenneth Alan Johnson.

The officer involved in the shooting have been identified as Officer Robert Makinster. He has been an officer with the department for six years.

The incident began shortly before 2 a.m. Friday. Police say Johnson was riding his moped, when officers pulled him over near Camino Al Norte and Ann Road. Johnson fled and police chased after him.

Johnson eventually abandoned his moped and ran from officers. During the chase, Johnson pulled out what police called a "replica of a semi-automatic handgun." Officer Mankinster shot Johnson multiple times near Tropical Parkway and Revere Street. Multiple officers were on scene, but only one opened fire.

Police say the suspect was transported to University Medical Center, where he died a short time later. No police officers sustained injuries.
