8 on Your Side: Man uses website to pay for funeral

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - Jim Snyder recently lost his wife to a very aggressive form of lung and brain cancer. The disease took her suddenly. Within a matter of days, Jim lost his wife and needed to pay for a funeral in addition to a mountain of medical bills.

He didn't know what to do to give his wife the funeral she deserved. He learned cremation, announcements and services would cost nearly $1,000.

His daughter came up with an idea to help pay for the costs. She suggested raising money for the funeral on GoFundMe.com. The website enabled family, friends and complete strangers to donate money for the funeral.

Jim says many people came to his aid.

“Friends and family, mostly family. One of my family members, a nephew I hadn't seen since 2008, was the second to donate,” he said.

Thanks to the generosity of dozens of people, Snyder and his daughter raised $400 or nearly half the cost of the funeral. Jim had a chance to say goodbye to his wife the way he wanted.

People fund many causes and projects through online fundraisers. In one year, this relatively new trend has increased by 13 percent, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy. People are raising money for anything from medical bills to treatment for sick pets.

If you want to start your own fundraiser, visit a legitimate fundraising website, such as GoFundMe or Kickstarter, and create a page.
