MGM Resorts looks to hire military veterans

LAS VEGAS - MGM Resorts International is trying to tackle unemployment among military veterans. The gaming giant hosts a job fair exclusively for veterans Tuesday morning.

MGM Resorts International is looking to fill hundreds of positions. The company’s recruiting team will meet with potential employees in the Marquee Ballroom at MGM Grand.

Hiring managers will interview candidates for positions in several areas including: food and beverage, human resources, marketing and sales.

Marvella Smith with MGM’s Talent Acquisition Department says the job fair represents a win for the company and the community.

“It’s our opportunity to reach out and help out our community, but it's also we have a lot of jobs and a lot of need,” she said. “So, it’s not for selfish reasons. We have the opportunities, and we want to offer those to our veterans that are coming back and transitioning back into the work force."

Unemployment among military veterans in southern Nevada is among the highest in the nation. The unemployment rate among veterans in Nevada is 8.4 percent. It's higher among post-9/11 veterans.

This is the second straight year MGM Resorts International will host this job fair. Organizers say they saw the need to hire soldiers who are struggling to transition into civilian life.

Retired Chief Master Sergeant Wilson Edgell is one of them. He spent 27 years in the U.S. Air Force. After more than a year out of the military, he says he is still adjusting to this new chapter of his life.

Edgell considers himself one of the lucky ones. He landed a job with MGM Resorts a month after he retired from the military. He's been with the company for a year and a half. While he says he is still making the transition, he also helps fellow veterans find work.

"A lot of military veterans will tell me, 'Well, I don't have experience in hospitality. I don't have experience in conceal operations. I don't have experience in retail.' It’s getting them to understand well you do have skills that are in high demand. It's all how you put that on the resume and how you articulate your experience to those hiring managers if you get called in for an interview,” he said.

Edgell, a senior consultant for organizational development, is in charge of performance management, which helps employees with work productivity.

The job fair lasts from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Recruiters urge job seekers to wear business attire and bring a military ID and updated resume. Organizers ask attendees to complete an online application before heading to MGM Grand.

The job fair is also open to the families of military members. They will need to show identification and documentation to show they have relatives in the military.
