Las Vegas highway murder plot figure gets probation

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- A 22-year-old woman was sentenced to three years' probation for conspiring to poison the husband of a woman convicted separately of orchestrating a shooting to kill the man for his life insurance.

Courtney Smith's lawyer, William Terry, said Monday that Smith is pregnant with her second child and wants to put the case behind her and take care of her children.

Smith was the fourth person convicted and sentenced in the case arising from the wounding of Robert Bessey while he drove to work on Interstate 15 in November 2012.

Smith pleaded guilty in May 2013 to conspiring with Amy Denise Pearson Bessey to poison Robert Bessey on Father's Day 2012.

Amy Bessey was convicted of conspiracy and attempted murder and is serving up to 44 years in prison.
