LAS VEGAS -- Metro Police have released new details about a child found dead on Friday and the child’s mother, who was hit by a car shortly before.

According to police, officers were called to the intersection of University Avenue and Pecos Road at about 7:10 p.m. Friday on a report of a woman who had been hit by a car.

When police arrived, they found the injured woman, Ryannae Brown, and she told police that her baby was dead inside a nearby home. Officers went inside the home and found an unresponsive 3-month-old baby.

Brown and the baby were taken to Sunrise Hospital, where medical personnel pronounced the infant dead.

Brown talked to 8 News NOW about what happened. She says she took an afternoon nap with her child and woke up to find her face down on a pillow, not breathing.

She told 8 News NOW she ran outside for help when she spotted a Las Vegas resident by the name of Cameo Chappelle, who was after her.

"From what I've been hearing, she has been coming around looking for me," Brown said.

Police say that Brown arrived at the home where the baby was shortly after being told her baby was not breathing. This conflicts with what Brown told 8 News NOW, Metro’s Abuse and Neglect Division is still investigating.

Police believe she was calling for help and had stepped outside to get better reception on her cell phone, when she was intentionally hit by a car driving by Chapelle.

Witnesses say the driver was parked nearby and went from zero to full speed across the street and rammed Brown into that palm tree.

Douglas Jones was leaving work late, when he saw the crash from just feet away. He jumped to action, protecting Brown from the Dodge Charger.

"But I saw her start to turn around so I went and grabbed the woman and took her into my business, locked the door and called 911. All this time saying her baby is dead. I looked around for a baby in the parking lot because I didn't know what she was talking about. She didn't have a baby with her," Jones said.

Police are still looking for the person who was driving the car.

The investigation into the baby’s death shows that it was an accidental sleeping death, but the exact cause and manner of death will be released by the Clark County Coroner’s Office.

Anyone with information is asked to call Metro Police at (702) 828-2521, or to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at (702) 385-5555.
