IKEA to open store in southwest Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS -- The popular Swedish furniture store, IKEA, is coming to the Las Vegas valley.

The company announced its plans at a news conference Monday. Company officials say the store will be located at Sunset  Road and Durango Drive and will open in the summer of 2016.

"We look forward to opening and making our first investment here in Las Vegas," said Joseph Roth with IKEA.

The retailer which is known for its affordable home furnishings only has 38 IKEA stores across the United States.

IKEA sells everything from kitchenware to beds. The catch is that the buyer must assemble most items.

"I just built my friend's desk that she bought in  California from IKEA," said Deborah Farmer, a UNLV student.

Farmer says college students currently go out of state to shop for IKEA furniture. She wishes the store would open sooner than 2016.

"Everybody loves IKEA. How can you not love IKEA?" Farmer said.

The construction of the store will create 1,000 construction jobs. Once completed, the store will employ 300 workers and offer other benefits.

"If you work 20 hours a week, you are still eligible for full time benefits," Roth said.
