Child found dead after unrelated hit-and-run

LAS VEGAS -- Metro Police are investigating a child found dead in a home near Harmon Avenue and Pecos Road.

According to police, officers were originally called to the scene at around 7:15 p.m. Friday on a report that a woman had been hit by a car.

While officers responded to the scene, the victim was able to get into her nearby house. When officers arrived, the woman came out of the house and told them her child was dead. The child is described as being under 2 years old.

Both the mother and the child were taken to Sunrise Hospital, where the child was pronounced dead. The mother is stable, but her condition is not known.

As for the driver, she left the scene of the crash. Police say the mother had exchanged words with the driver of the car, before she was hit. The car is described as a gray Dodge Charger.

Police say the bizarre hit and run and the baby's death are not related. They aren't sure whether the baby died as a result of a crime.

"Any time a young baby dies under the age of two or whatever, Abuse and Neglect always comes out, and, sometimes, we'll come out as well. Due to the fact there was a vehicle accident prior to medical personnel and officers arriving, they just informed us, so we can do a joint investigation," Sgt. Matthew Sanford said.

Police are not sure why the mother was out of the home and in the street. The baby was inside the house the entire time.

Police say there is no prior history with Child Protective Services with this family.
