Graffiti cleanup comes with hefty price tag

LAS VEGAS -- Tagger's may see their work as modern art, but to others it's graffiti and a public eyesore.

The Nevada Department of Transportation will be installing graffiti guards on Saturday to fight against vandalism along areas of US 95.

"It devalues property," said Stephen Kopolow who frequently drives along US 95.  "It shows that these people have absolutely no regard for themselves or the property of others."

"I find it depressing," said Geraldine Norman, another driver. "The kids needs to be taught that there are consequences."

Metro Police say graffiti vandals use ropes and other devices to climb near freeway signs and leave their mark. On Saturday night at 9 p.m., NDOT will begin installing guards on freeway signs that are designed to make it more difficult for Tagger's to access.

"It's part of us being proactive and trying to make sure we keep the signs clean and viewable to the public," said Damon Hodge, NDOT.

He says it's not a cure all, but it's made a difference in other areas where they have installed guards.

"There's nothing that prevents it altogether. We've installed graffiti guards on the I-15 near Lake Mead and Cheyenne and we've seen a reduction in the number of tags in those areas," Hodge said.

NDOT spent $80,000 last year to remove graffiti on some highway signs. Metro Police say the average cost of graffiti removal in the greater Las Vegas area is around $30 million annually which includes public and private funds.

Metro Police say they arrest just as many adults as they do teens for graffiti.

Police say, when juveniles commit vandalism, their parents can be held accountable to pay full restitution that can amount to thousands of dollars. The teens and adults can also face hundreds of hours of community service or jail time.

The work on the signs will take place from 9 p.m. Saturday to 5 a. m. Sunday. The two lanes on US 95 North near Rainbow will close.
