World Cup boosting soccer's appeal in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS - The World Cup championship game takes place Sunday. As the global soccer tournament comes to a close, Las Vegas soccer players are preparing to hit the field.

Several soccer leagues are available throughout the valley. The Clark County Soccer League operates year-round. The league includes 3,000 members, 50 teams for men and women and 60 youth teams for younger players.

Clark County Soccer League Director Jorge De La Hoya says the local soccer community has grown in recent years, and the World Cup is boosting the sport’s popularity.

“Just because it's out there, just because the parents have this option of coming over to try out soccer for their kids. It's something that's big in the media right now. It’s big on TV, and this is what they're exposed to," he said.

Registration for the Nevada Alliance Soccer League is also underway. The organization hosts a free soccer clinic Friday.

Brazil faces the Netherlands for third place honors Saturday at 1 p.m. The championship game between Argentina and Germany takes place Sunday at 12 p.m.
