Acts of Kindness: Cindy Howell

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - It’s a Piece of Cake owner Cindy Howell uses her business to support her true passion: helping foster kids.

“I feel these kids are just kind of lost, and people don't remember that they are here, because they don't wear a tag that says, ‘I'm in the foster care system,’” she said. “At the end of the day, they just want to feel special, and what more way to celebrate a child than on the day they entered this world to say we love you, and we are so happy you are here?”

The money she makes goes to creating special birthdays for as many foster kids as she can reach. So far, she has helped 300 foster kids.

Howell works with St. Jude's in Boulder City and Eagle Quest of Nevada. They provide a list of upcoming birthdays, and Howell handles the baking. She and her volunteers show up with special cakes and $25 gift cards for the foster kids.

“When you get to be at the door, and this little boy answers it, and he's ear to ear with a smile on his face for a cake, it just really just makes you realize it was all worth it at the end,” she said.

Howell was born and raised in Las Vegas. She took up baking as a hobby. Howell used to work in the medical field. She decided to turn her hobby into an opportunity to help others when she heard a touching story from a homeless woman who had been in and out of the foster care system.

“Through the story, I found out that she never had a birthday. One time in particular, her grandma showed up randomly at a house she was placed at and had a cupcake. She said it's the only thing she ever received for her birthday, and she would never forget it,” Howell said.

Now, it's Howell’s mission to ensure other foster kids won't be forgotten.

“Thankfully with this and everything else that people can start acknowledging that these kids need love, and we're here to bake it for them,” she said.

Approximately 3,500 foster kids live in southern Nevada. Cindy Howell’s goal is to give a birthday celebration to every one of them. That commitment earns her this week’s Acts of Kindness award.
