Las Vegas-- A man and his dog were found on the roof of a home trying to escape a house fire early Sunday morning. Firefighters

responded to a fire at 4901 Vega Lane, near Torrey Pines Drive and Lone Mountain Road, just after 2:30 a.m. Arriving crews saw saw smoke and flames coming from the window of an upstairs bedroom on the second floor of the home. Fire crews were able to rescue the man and his dog.

The man told investigators that the fire started because of careless smoking. The man said, his exit was blocked from the bedroom so he escaped out the window to the roof and waited for help.

The fire, which was confined to the bedroom, was put out by firefighters in a matter of minutes.

The damage is estimated at $20,000. The Red Cross is helping the three people who were displaced by the fire.
