Nev. gets 1-year pass on federal school standards

Posted: Updated:

CARSON CITY (AP) - Nevada schools are getting another year-long exemption from the tough requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

State Superintendent Dale Erquiaga said Thursday that the waiver for the 2014-15 school year will allow Nevada to continue on the path of implementing standards-based teaching and performance assessments for students and educators.

Officials with the U.S. Department of Education say they're pleased with Nevada's progress carrying out reforms, and will allow the state even more flexibility if it stays on track to implement teacher and administrator evaluation systems.

The George W. Bush-era No Child Left Behind Act would have required 100 percent of students to pass state tests in the 2013-14 school year. State officials say few, if any, Nevada schools could meet that expectation.
