8 on Your Side: Grill brushes could cause health problems
By Michelle Mortensen, Investigative Reporter - email
LAS VEGAS - Danger may be lurking on your backyard grill. 8 on Your Side shows how a simple utensil can cause major problems.
The danger lies in the brushes used to clean grills. A grill cleaning brush is a wire brush that easily scrapes off debris. It's a very useful tool.
The Centers for Disease Control warns, however, those bristles can easily come off the brush, attach to the grill and potentially get into your food.
That can cause severe injuries such as punctures to the neck, stomach or intestines. Most victims are not aware of the problem until they become very sick - suffering from symptoms such as painful swallowing, abdominal pain or vomiting.
You can take steps to protect yourself. Check your grilling surfaces before you cook anything, and make sure they are clean of debris. The easiest way to do this is by cleaning the grill with a moist cloth or paper towel after using the brush.
Replace your grill brushes often, and make sure you only use brushes that are designed for hot surfaces.
There are also alternatives to grill brushes such as grill floss or grill stones. Those items are available at many local stores.
