Fire officials urge precaution at July 4th parties

LAS VEGAS - If you are hosting an Independence Day party this weekend, Las Vegas Fire and Rescue offers tips to ensure your party is a safe one.

Even with hot temperatures outside, people will fire up their grill. First responders advise people to keep their barbecues at least 10 feet away from any building.

Never leave it unattended and watch out for children who may be nearby. They can get burned or get their hands on matches and lighters.

If you live in an apartment complex, it is against the law to grill from a balcony.

Tim Szymanski with Las Vegas Fire and Rescue also urges people to pay close attention to children during large parties.

“The thing that we see is there is just so much commotion going on, so many activities, that, sometimes, people lose track of the kids,” he said. “If your child ends up missing and you have a pool, the first place you want to check is the pool."

Szymanski recommends assigning a responsible adult to watch the pool. Kids should also wear personal floatation devices.

Fireworks, meanwhile, are a staple of Independence Day. Szymanski says children should never handle fireworks. Even sparklers pose a danger.

If you plan to launch fireworks, have a water hose, bucket of water and shovel nearby.
