Las Vegas council proposing more downtown booze rules

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Las Vegas city councilmembers are pushing forward with their crusade against heavy drinking at the Fremont Street Experience.

The City Council previously passed an ordinance requiring nearby stores to put packaged liquor in a sealed bag after purchase. A rule set to be introduced Wednesday bans people from opening the bags while on the pedestrian mall.

City officials say alcohol-fueled fights are giving the downtown attraction a bad reputation. They've placed some blame on souvenir stores that sell liquor at cheaper prices than bars and casinos.

Council members took aim at the stores in June with a rule that bans people from drinking from open aluminum or glass containers. Souvenir stores say the new rules violate their rights and will hurt their bottom line.
