Police warn of more victims after lewdness arrest

Posted: Updated:
LAS VEGAS — Metro police on Tuesday announced they have arrested a 40-year-old Henderson man in connection to an investigation of an alleged incident involving an underage child.

According to a police investigation which began on June 16, Bryan Hargrave frequented youth hockey events at an ice arena in the 2400 block of North Rancho Dr. Police say he spent time interacting with children and their parents and is also the place where he met his victim.

In the arrest report released Monday, the victim's mother called police after her son told her that Hargrave had touched him. She told police she met Hargrave at the ice rink and he had been a family friend for the past two years. Her son told her Hargrave touched him while he was tucking him into bed.

The victim's mother told police that Hargrave was known to befriend many single moms with boys who played hockey and that some people thought he was "creepy."

"Those are the people we're looking to talk to, who he might have gained their trust." Lt. Dan McGrath with Metro Police said.

Alyson Shainker is a licensed clinical social worker and has experience working with victims and abusers. Shainker adds it is important to have open dialogue with kids and set sexual boundaries so everyone is clear with what's appropriate and what isn't.

"A lot of the time the child loves the person who abused them, or has a relationship with the person who abused them,” Shainker said. "It is very rare that they have just one single victim.”

Shainker said parents should look for withdrawn behavior in their child that includes unexplained crying or if someone is treating the child differently.

"I think it's important to talk to a child even before there are signs of possible sexual abuse,” Shainker said.

When confronted with the allegations, police say Hargrave tried to kill himself by slitting his wrists. He was taken to University Medical Center to be treated for his wounds. While in the hospital, police tried talking to him, but he refused because he said he was under the influence of pain medications.

He is at the Clark County Detention Center booked on one count of lewdness with a child under fourteen.

Metro said the case remains under investigation and warn of possibly more victims. Police are revisiting allegations in a similar case from six years ago involving Hargrave, where police did not have enough probable cause to make an arrest.

"Some of the kids that we're trying to contact are up to 15 now. So we're talking over a period of maybe five years." Lt. Dan McGrath said.

EDITOR'S NOTE: A previous version of this story incorrectly identified Hargrave as the owner of a Las Vegas sandwich shop. Hargrave incorrectly identified himself as the owner on a cable TV show when he was actually a manager. Hargrave is no longer associated with the shop.
