Nevada jobless rate lowest since September 2008

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) -- Nevada's unemployment fell below to 7.9 percent in May, its lowest point in nearly six years. A

state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation report released Friday says Nevada employers added 8,300 jobs in May.

That was far more than the 5,900 that were expected, and it continued a growth trend that began in early 2011.

Chief Economist Bill Anderson says Nevada's jobless rate is still among the highest in the country.

Nationwide, unemployment is at 6.3 percent.

But the state figure is below 8 percent for the first time since September 2008.

The May figure followed a half-point drop from March to April that represented the biggest monthly decrease in the statewide unemployment rate in more than 30 years.

Anderson says construction is showing the biggest gains.
