County approves dozens of medical pot growers

LAS VEGAS -- The Las Vegas valley could soon see more than a 100 businesses growing medical pot for profit.

People looking to open medical pot cultivation, production and labs each gave a six minute sales pitch to Clark County leaders Tuesday, hoping to get approved and most did.

The commission approved 101 applications for local grow operations. The approvals could lead to dozens of medical pot grow houses across the Las Vegas valley.

Both county leaders and the businesses involved say they don't feel it will be too many.

"It is not to approve all of them or approve a set number. With the dispensaries, we were limited to 18. We don't want to put a limitation on the high end or the low end here," County Commissioner Steve Sisolak said.

"I think everybody has the right idea for their communities and they've been able to do it fair, honest, and openly," Randy Black with Clear River said.

There has been some concern from critics that the county’s plan could flood the market with medical pot grow houses.

However, advocates say the need is so great even having a hundred grow facilities in the valley won't fill the requests of patients.

"I feel by approving all of them, it would be a good idea. I don't believe the supply is going to be overwhelming, as some believe, because high amounts of cannabis are needed to make these concentrates," Vicki Higgins with MMJ Advocates said.

All of the applications approved Tuesday still need to be approved by the state, which could choose to narrow down the pool.

County leaders also feel some will fall off, because it costs so much money to get involved in cultivation. Commissioners are expecting to hear more from people applying to open grow facilities Wednesday morning.
