LAS VEGAS -- The Las Vegas community, police and family members are gathering to say goodbye and honor Metro Police Officer Alyn Beck on Saturday.

Officer Beck and Igor Soldo were ambushed and killed last Sunday as they ate lunch at a pizza restaurant in northeast Las Vegas. He was remembered as a "Renaissance" man, a great police officer and a loving family man.

"Alyn was first and foremost a police officer. That was until he went home," said sister Elizabeth Krmpotich. "That's when he was first and foremost a father and husband."

More than 2,000 gathered to say goodbye to Beck in a packed Smith Center, the first time the venue held such a service.

"He was a great man, officer, and an even better family man," said friend and Metro Sgt. Jimmy Oaks. He jokingly added, "he could eat his way through a box of cupcakes in record fashion."

Like others who spoke, friend and Officer Mike Bland gushed about Beck's flawless character. "I don't want to focus on the tragic events that happened that day," he said. "I want to focus on what a great man Alyn was. I was to focus and remember the memories we had together."

Sheriff Doug Gillespie shared a story of a young 5-year-old boy, who donated $100, his birthday money, to officers at a recent fundraising event. When the officer asked the boy if he was sure he wanted to donate because it was so much money the boy responded, "yes, because angel wings cost a lot of money."

After the memorial, Beck's family and hundreds of officers paid a final tribute in Symphony Park, just outside the Smith Center. It was there Beck's wife was presented with the flag that draped his casket.

Beck leaves behind a wife, Nicole, son, Daxton, and daughters Avenlee and Katriann. He will be buried in Wyoming.
