Lombardo, Burns will face off for sheriff spot

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- Assistant Sheriff Joe Lombardo and retired police Capt. Larry Burns will face off in November to be Clark County’s top cop.

Lombardo and Burns were the top vote getters in Tuesday’s primary election. The third highest was Ted Moody.

They are vying to replace Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie who announced his retirement after eight years as sheriff.

The winner will take over the 4,800-employee Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, which covers all of Clark County except the cities of Henderson, North Las Vegas, Mesquite and Boulder City.

All the candidates decided to tone down their election night celebrations following the deadly shooting of two Metro Police officers earlier this week.
