Northeast neighborhood mourns loss of officers

LAS VEGAS -- The deaths of the two officers is also a loss to the community they served in northeast Las Vegas.

"I think it's a terrible waste, it's a waste of life," said Eileen Ladelfa.

She lives in a senior mobile home community near the CiCi's Pizza restaurant where Officers Alyn Beck and Igor Soldo were gunned down Sunday. She says she met both of the officers, a few years back, when she encountered a dangerous situation.

"My neighbor was a little mental and he pulled a knife on me," she said.

Ladelfa says the two officers were able to get the situation under control.

Some say the neighborhood where the shooting took place has had its share of violent crimes.

"Lots of drugs around here, a lot of guns. It's easy to buy everything," said Jorge Perez, who lives in the area.

He says it has been good to see more police presence in the area in recent days. He would like to see that continue.

"More police right here because lots of crazy people," Perez said.

"No matter how many times you look at it and break it down, it's just a sad, sad situation," said Mike Shannon who works at the insurance office across from the pizza restaurant.

He's touched to see the outpouring of support from the community. He recently got help from police when a deranged man tried to break into his office.

"Scared some people and they came right in and handled it quietly and efficiently and took care of it," he said.

Ladelfa, who brought flowers to the restaurant where the officers were killed, says more police presence is always good but it doesn't end all crimes.

"I see lot of them around all the time but I don't think it's really going to stop anything. If it's going to happen it's going to happen," Ladelfa said.

Metro Police have received calls from all over the country asking how people can help the families of the two slain officers. Information on donations can be found here.
