All 18 licenses for medical marijuana businesses handed out

Posted: Updated:
LAS VEGAS -- Clark County commissioners have approved licenses for all 18 medical marijuana dispensaries available in its jurisdiction.

For the past three days, commissioners have listened to dozens of people pitch theirpresentations for opening a dispensary.

"I will say it was grueling hour and a half, pins and needles for all of us. My wife and I were incredibly emotional it is fair to say," Hugh Hempel, who is one of people selected.

In all, 81 applicants put in for the competitive process. Two applicants pulled out of the process leaving 79. There were only 18 licenses available. The dispensaries will be dispersed throughout the county.

Commissioners say they took into account location of the business, security and how many of the owners of the proposed dispensaries actually live and work in Nevada. They also took into account how many people protested any application.

Despite Friday's approval process, they all still need to be approved by the state.

"As vetted as these 18 are, they went through an awful lot of questioning by 7 commissioners, hours of public hearing, public question, i can't imagine that the state would have a problem with any of those applicants," Clark County Commissioner Steve Sisolak said.

The applicants can now apply to the state which will begin accepting applications in early August.
