LAS VEGAS -- The man involved in a shootout with Metro Police killed himself, according to police.

During a news conference about the shooting Thursday, Metro announced that 31-year-old Danny Michael Wadsworth, Jr. killed himself.

The incident started at the Town Square shopping center Friday evening. Police say Wadsworth stole the purses of two women in the parking lot of the shopping center at around 8:15 p.m. He then led police on a chase that ended at Sahara Avenue near Las Vegas Boulevard, when he crashed into another car.

Police say that officers on the scene heard Wadsworth fire his weapon, and they believed he was firing at them. Two officers returned fire, hitting the suspect's car.

However, the Clark County Coroner's Office later ruled Wadsworth died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Wadsworth had a lengthy criminal record including drug, theft and child endangerment charges.
