Deadline nears for health care sign up

Posted: Updated:
LAS VEGAS -- The deadline to sign up for health insurance through the state exchange is Friday at midnight.

Despite hundreds of website glitches, more than 35,000 people have signed up and paid for health insurance plans. However, there are still more than 13,000 applications are still sitting the system and errors on the website are causing problems for some applicants.

Uninsured for the past six years, Lisa Coffey says she was living in fear.

"What if I get hit by a car? What if this? What if that?"

She said signing up for health coverage was daunting.

"You don't know what's happening, and you don't know what's available," Coffey said.

She finally went straight to an insurance provider for help with the process.

"A lot of people got frustrated," said Patti McCoy, Nevada Health Co-Op.

The co-op is racing get people signed up before the special enrollment period closes Friday at midnight.

"Every day there are challenges," McCoy said.

Nevada Health Link's website is still dealing with errors and if an error prevents you from confirming your plan or displaying the amount you should pay before Friday's deadline, you can file an appeal. That could help you get coverage after May 30.

"If for some reason you couldn't effectuate your plan selection, confirm, and get the payment amount for that, that would be something that would be appealable," said C.J. Bawden, Silver State Health Exchange.

For everyone else, the deadline is Friday.

Exchange workers say if you need help, enlist a navigator or insurance broker.

"These people have been doing it for years and years. They understand our system and they understand health insurance. They are going to be able to help select the best plan for you," Bawden said.

"I'm covered baby! I've got insurance," Coffey said.

She's encouraging others like her to get covered.

While the deadline to signup is Friday at midnight, all plans need to be paid for by June 15. If you need to file an appeal because of website problems, the state has 30 days to make a decision.
