LAS VEGAS -- Metro Police released new details about the mother accused of shooting her 11-year-old son.

According to the police report released Wednesday, the suspect, 31-year-old Shavon Carrillo, otherwise known as Shavon Aguilar, shot her son because she wanted herself and her children to be in a 'better place.'

The shooting happened Monday morning at a home near Vegas Drive and Decatur Boulevard. Carrillo told police she was staying at her sister's house with her three kids because she was going through a breakup with husband. She also said she had tried to kill herself because her marriage of 12 years was falling apart.

In the arrest report, Carrillo told police she used a rifle that she got from a friend to try to kill her son. She told police that her son was sleeping on a sleeping bag in the room he was sharing with her, her two other children and her niece. She told officers that she told her son she loved him just before or just after she pulled the trigger.

Carrillo's brother-in-law came into the room when he heard the shot and was able to take the gun away from her. She said she wanted to kill herself but her brother-in-law had the gun.

In the report, Carrillo told police that she felt her husband would take care of her daughters, because they were his biological children, but he would not take care of her son. She told police if she and her son both died, they could be together.

Carrillo is charged with attempted murder with a deadly weapon and child abuse with a weapon. She is also being charged with child endangerment with mental harm because of the other children in the room at the time of the shooting.

The victim is in critical condition.
