Investigators: Exact cause of 2-alarm fire cannot be determined

Posted: Updated:
LAS VEGAS -- Las Vegas Fire & Rescue investigators say a two-alarm fire that damaged a two-story building downtown Tuesday started on the second floor toward the rear of the building. However, investigators say the cause of the fire is undetermined.

The fire broke out shortly before 8:30 p.m. at a vacant apartment building near 9th Street and Stewart Avenue. Firefighters called for a second alarm shortly after responding to the scene.

Witnesses told fire investigators that homeless people were seen going in and out of the building. The fire was the third over the past six months. The two previous fires started on mattresses.

Fire crews extinguished the fire within an hour. Fire officials say smoke from the fire and a temporary power outage displaced eight people from nearby apartments. The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced people.

At first firefighters were told people were screaming for help from the second floor, but after a thorough search Wednesday, no one was found in the building. There have been no reports to the fire department or to police of anyone missing.
