Police: Boy 'extremely critical' after shooting

Posted: Updated:
LAS VEGAS - Police say an 11-year-old boy is in "extremely critical" condition after being shot Monday morning at an apartment on Pebble Beach Boulevard near Vegas Drive and Michael Way.

The shooting happened shortly after 5 a.m. at the apartment complex. Initial reports indicated the boy was shot in the head, but police have yet to confirm that information.

In  the early morning hours, neighbors says something like an explosion came from inside apartment B.

"You ever hear a firework explode really close to you? It turns out, it was gunfire," said Erick Machuca, a neighbor.

Police say the bullet hit the boy, in his home, while surrounded by family members.

The boy was taken to University Medical Center in critical condition. Officers are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. It is not clear if the shooting was intentional or accidental. Around eight people live in the apartment, police say.

"All family members are involved. Right now we don't know whether it was an accident or not," said Metro Sgt. Michael Sanford.

"That little kid just minds his own business. Just plays soccer around here. I always see him playing tag with his friend. I didn't know it was him that got shot," Machuca said.

Investigators were unable to locate the boy's father, but did speak with his mother and the gun was confiscated.

Police say they have never responded to a call at that home in the past.
