-- Cox Communications announced Thursday its plan to offer Wi-Fi hotspot service throughout the Las Vegas valley that would be available to all Cox customers.
It will start rolling out the service later this year. Cox officials say there are approximately 400,000 local Cox subscribers. Cox also said that starting this summer it is upgrading the system so those customers get double their current internet speed.
The cable company made the announcement at an apartment complex that is under construction because it will be one of the first places in the valley where cable residential customers can get super-fast gigabit internet speeds.
"You are definitely on the leading edge here. This is a pioneering moment. That's why we are so excited to be here," president of Cox Communication Patrick Esser.
Cox announced it will also begin offering gigabit service to residential customers. The extra fast network connection is currently only offered to businesses.
"People love to have mobility around your home and you have that today. Now you will be able to leave your home and road throughout the market," Esser said.
Cox is also partnering with other cable companies across the country so customers can use 250,000 Wi-Fi hotspots nationwide.
