CCSD approves $2.2B budget

Posted: Updated:
LAS VEGAS -- The Clark County School District approved a nearly $2.2 billion budget Wednesday night for the 2014-2015 school year.

It's an increase of $50 million over the current budget. District officials say the extra money was due to a slight increase in property taxes and a projected increase of more than 3,300 new students to the district which increases state funding.

The additional funding will allow the district to hire an extra 233 teachers and about 500 support staff. Superintendent Pat Skorkowsky says money will also go toward professional development for the two new exit exams that students will take next year.

"It's so important that we have our teachers have materials and the information ready for the new assessment, the new assessment is everything that we measure against compared to the state and other states in the future," he said.

The budget also targets $4 million for transportation and $2 million for technology. The budget now goes to the State Department of Taxation for approval. The district was required to submit a budget by June 8.
