8 on Your Side exposes dangers of geo-tracking

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - Millions of people have smart phones, and many of these phone owners also post on social media accounts such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Social media have become America's favorite pastime. Did you know, however, your social media accounts and the pictures you post could reveal everything about you, including where you live, work and play?

“There are ways for people to discover where you took a photo at, longitude and latitude. There are even maps that show you where the photo was taken,” said security expert Edward Norton with Norton Consulting and Investigations. “How common is it for pedophiles and people like that to use those tools? Very common, but it’s not just pedophiles, but people who want to check on their spouses, boyfriends and girlfriends.”

When you post a picture on social media, for example, you also post a map to your exact location.

“There are all kinds of tools out there that people can use to track you,” Norton said.

Thanks to these tools, pedophiles could see which park your kids play at or which businesses you frequent. Anyone can find anything.

Additionally, what you think is private may not be. An online stalker can find pictures from Facebook accounts that are set on private.

So how can you protect yourself? One way is to disable the GPS setting on the camera on your phone. That way, locations will not be posted on the pictures you text, Tweet or upload.

On an iPhone, go to Settings, Privacy and Location Services. Then, turn off everything or just certain applications like your camera.

With Android phones, go into the camera app, then Settings and uncheck the GPS option.
