Community rallies around teacher after house fire

BOULDER CITY-- The Boulder City community is uniting this Mother's Day to help an area teacher in need.

On Thursday, Lisa Combs, a teacher at King Elementary School in Boulder City, was on a school trip when she learned her home was on fire.

Combs' children said the family's four cats were killed and nearly all of their mother and stepfather's possessions were destroyed by flames and smoke. Now, they are sorting through the damage.

"There's a lot of memories attached to this house," said Cameron Thompson, Combs' son.

"It hurts, you know?"

Lou Krumm had a daughter in Combs' class last year, and said she couldn't sit back and let the Combs family go it alone. She said the thought of a fire was terrifying.

"It's one of my worst fears," Krumm said.

Krumm said she and other community members were dropping off food, clothes, gift cards and more just hours after the home caught fire.

"A fire is such a devastating incident," Krumm said. "It damages everything."

Since the fire, support has been overwhelming for Lisa Combs and her family. Krumm said Boulder City High School is collecting coins to raise money. A local principal is also offering to shave his head if his students can raise a certain dollar amount for the teacher's family.

Other community members have started a bank account at the Boulder Dam Credit Union, where checks can be made out to Lisa Combs.

"I can't thank everybody enough for just being there for us," said Courtney Thompson, Combs' daughter.

Kendal Bennet-Jordan, 11, is one of Comb's students. She was there when Combs found out her home was gone.

"She's the greatest teacher I've ever had," Bennet-Jordan said.

Watching video of the house fire on a cell phone, Bennet-Jordan said she felt upset watching it.

"It's kind of sad actually watching it slowly burn," she said.

Now, she and other community members said they will continue the effort to get her teacher back on her feet.
