Strip projects bring opportunities for UNLV grads

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- It is a great time to find a job on the Las Vegas Strip, especially for new college graduates, according to an economist at UNLV.

New projects along the boulevard are bringing in big opportunities. The Cromwell is hiring nearly 1,000 new employees and the SLS Las Vegas is already in the process of hiring nearly 3,000 people, many of them locals.

Top resorts are recruiting on college campuses for the first time in years. A representative for timeshare giant Westgate Resorts is looking for new grads who will take a job and look to grow within the company.

"You want to get the students involved. They're graduating, they're coming in, best way to get your foot in the door and move up." the representative said.

For many UNLV seniors, it is time to strike while the iron is hot.

"Definitely a lot more opportunities in Vegas than let's say five years ago," senior Spencer Trapp said.

The new projects on the Strip are leading to thousands of new jobs in hospitality and gaming.

UNLV economist Stephen Brown says new projects like The Cromwell and the SLS are creating more hotel rooms, which means nearly 2,900 new hotel and gaming jobs in the next two years. Those jobs will then lead to nearly 5,000 new jobs in total valley wide.

"That is a very sizable growth number for Las Vegas," Brown said, "I think the opportunities look really good for people who want to find a job in Las Vegas and it is a good time to be a graduate."

Some life-long students say they have seen the Strip grow and change in the last five years.

"It's something that Vegas needed," senior Cameron Alford said.

They're seeing the results with opportunity.

"There are a lot of job openings out there and I know a lot friends who have started at the lower levels and they're starting to gradually move up," Alford said.
